Police Caught Ekiti Jailbreak Fugitives During Fresh Robbery In Ondo State
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Ondo State has re-arrested two suspected criminals confirmed to have escaped from an Ekiti jail in November 2014.
The police told SaharaReporters that the arrested men have been identified as 40 year old Banji Adedayo and 45 year old Tope Daramola. Police also told SaharaReporters that these men were arrested in connection with another robbery incident in Akure.
A SaharaReporters correspondent learned that the escapees were part of deadly killer gang of armed robbers that has been terrorizing Akure, and its environs, since March 2015. The violence, police believe the gang is responsible for, began shortly after these individuals escaped from prison.
The Commissioner of Police for Ondo State, Isaac Eke, who paraded the suspects at the Command Headquarters in Akure said the duo, upon their escape from prison in Ekiti, joined a five-man armed robber gang.
Commissioner Eke said the two suspected criminals were joined by Segun Akinseye, of Ondo State, and subsequently stole Mr. Remidayo Komolafe’s Toyota Sienna Bus with Reg. No. KJA 790 CH, value at 1.6 million naira on Ondo Road in Akure.
He added that the robbers also forcefully collected five mobile phones from the victim, valued at 200,000 naira as well as other possessions.
“Upon police interrogation [the men] confessed to the crime and other robbery cases, including an Ekiti State bank robbery, and both were inmates who escaped from Ekiti jailbreak,” he said.
The Police Commissioner also confirmed that the suspects had led a gang of armed robbers to rob a mobile phone dealer in Igbara-Oke.
Eke noted that detectives attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad [SARS], of the Ondo Police Command in Akure, swung into action and, through forensic analysis, arrested the suspects.
Meanwhile, another fleeing member of the killer gang, Titus Olorunsola, was shot on his left leg while trying to grab an AK 47 rifle during a police raid of their camp.
The Police have, however, vowed to apprehend other fleeing culprits of the gang to ensure the stolen vehicle is recovered.
