The record will show that the last kick of this season’s UEFA
Champions League belonged to Barcelona striker Neymar. With one
left-footed shot, he gave Barcelona a 3-1 lead over Juventus, jolted
20,000 Catalan fans into wild celebration and single-handedly ended the
world’s most prestigious club competition.
But the victory was
more than the top team in Spain grinding down the top team in Italy. On
Saturday night in the Olympic Stadium here, Barcelona won its fourth
Champions League title in a decade to cement its status as the most
dominant club of its generation.
By the end of the night, there was quite literally a Catalan flag planted in the center of Europe’s biggest stage.
There can be no questions about Barcelona’s merit this season. For a
competition that sets its matchups by random draw every round, the
Champions League handed Barça a unique challenge through the spring. The club rose to it every time.
On
its way to the lifting the trophy, Barcelona dismissed the reigning
champions of England, France, Germany and Italy. What would have seemed
unfairly complicated for any other team became Barcelona’s opportunity
to demonstrate its power all over Europe. Barcelona marched through
Manchester, Paris, and Munich on its way to Berlin.
