No fewer
than five persons, including a woman and her three children, were reportedly
killed in an accident along Bayelsa State stretch of the newly-dualised
East-West Road.
The
accident, which occurred on Saturday at about 3.40p.m. along Adagbabiri axis of
the East-West Road in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state, threw traders
in the area into mourning.
Report gathered that the deceased, identified as Ruth, and her children, Favour
(female), aged nine, Godgift (boy), aged five, and Oghenerho (a baby), died
when the driver of a Toyota Highlander SUV, identified as Meeting Okpekpe
Mayor, reportedly lost control of the car and crashed into their kiosk by the
road side.
A female
passenger in the car also died, while driver and one of the deceased woman’s
daughters are in critical condition at Delta State University Teaching
Hospital, Oghara.
The
woman, like several others, have kiosks by the road side where they sell food
stuffs such as smoked fish, shrimps, crayfish, palm oil and palm wine to
commuters.
An
eyewitness said: “The woman was having lunch with her children when the SUV
rammed into their kiosk and crushed them. The woman and her three children have
been confirmed dead, while one is still hanging onto life.”
The
remains of the deceased had since been deposited at the morgue of Ughelli
General Hospital in neighbouring Delta State.
