How Will Chelsea Line Up With David Luiz
David Luiz's £32m move from Paris Saint-Germain to Chelsea gives his new manager Antonio Conte the chance to deploy a three at the back system - a formation that he used effectively with Juventus and Italy.
The 29-year-old's arrival resolved a minor defensive crisis for Chelsea as they struggled to bring in numbers and quality until transfer deadline day, when they also signed Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina as well as Luiz.
Conte has plenty of options in terms of how to use Luiz, having so far lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation in the Premier League and the 4-2-4 formation in the EFL Cup against Bristol Rovers without the Brazilian.
Luizl is primarily a defender, but is comfortable playing in a holding role in midfield and recently said that he will play anywhere for his new manager.
"It doesn't matter where [I play]," Luiz told Chelsea TV. "I want to help and when I am in the team, so if he needs to play three, four or two [at the back], it doesn't matter."
However, Conte revealed that he will use him primarily as a centre-back, which is in no small part due to having lesser options at the back than in midfield.
He recently told the club's official website: "I know sometimes he's played as a central midfielder but in my mind the idea is to utilise him in the right position which, for me, he is centre-back."
Here is how Luiz might slot into the two formations Conte has already deployed at Chelsea so far this term ahead of their trip to Swansea City on Sunday.
Luiz will be interchangeable with the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill, Kurt Zouma and Branislav Ivanovic throughout the season, just as Oscar, Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic will be in midfield.
If Chelsea begin to trial a 3-5-2 formation, which Conte used successfully at Euro 2016, it will mostly effect Eden Hazard's role as he will be asked to play alongside Diego Costa with Alonso slotting in at left wing back.
Like Luiz, Alonso is also a versitile player and can play in a number of roles which include left back, left-sided midfielder and also as a make-shift centre back.
Hazard could also be trusted as a number 10 behind Costa after trialling that role effectively against Real Madrid in pre-season, while Zouma might be brought back to help inject pace to the back line.
Luiz is a ball-playing centre back whose passing ability is so good that he can play in midfield and could be asked to do so, from time to time, to help Chelsea when they need to hold onto narrow leads.
In the main, though, it will be hard for him to compete with N'Golo Kante for a regular place in the defensive midfield role as the Frenchman has established himself as a key player already after a series of amazing performances at the start of the season.
Luiz moving into midfield would most likely be to replace Matic and here's a look at how it could work.
Conte will likely use a variety of different formations throughout the season as he prefers to tactically adapt to his rivals, unlike Manchester City's Pep Guardiola who never alters from his philosophy.
